Founder of multiple identities (mi), Jacqueline Haeberle, celebrates multiple anniversaries by making her signature creation available to the public: an Afro hair pick comb and a set of hair sticks featuring a proud female fist of dissent with an extended middle finger. The moment it drops during Wallen Festival on 22 & 23 of June is no coincidence.
A not-so-subtle token of intent. A symbol of resistance. A conversation starter. A sign of female solidarity in a male dominated world. These accessories are intended as an open invitation to engage in critical conversation, extended by German designer J. Haeberle, in honour of her 20 years of citizenship in Amsterdam and the 25th anniversary of her studio multiple identities [mi], which has been based in the Red Light District for almost 10 years now. A female powerhouse, in a city district defined by women.
Let's have a closer reading of this global gesture and change the narrative.
After having defied decades of controversy and misunderstanding, the middle finger, an ancient gesture symbolising phallic aggression, has emerged as a true symbol of care. An exclamation mark in human form. A gesture made in acknowledgement of the dense reality of Plato's cave. A gesture we can imagine David intended on the rock he flicked at Goliath. A gesture made into art by the Chinese artist Ai Wei Wei in offence of just about everything representing institutionalized power. And yes, a gesture often made by celebrities to ward off the ever-hungry monster that is the media. Sometimes making world-wide headlines, like when the British artist M.I.A. extended a middle finger during her halftime performance at the American Super Bowl in 2012 to ridicule the football league for claiming wholesomeness. Sometimes faked, like by the artist Alison Jackson who manufactures photographs featuring famous people to expose the cult of celebrity, like the portrait of Lady Di flipping the bird, a case in point as we can't tell what is real anymore. The contemporary middle finger is like a mirror with no merci. A critical cultural intervention. There to disrupt the uncaring. See?
Jacqueline Haeberle is a visionary designer, specialized in innovation, functional apparel and product with purpose. Initially, she made her signature comb with the fist of dissent, based on the original design from 1972, but feminised and with the middle finger out, as a reminder to seek and speak truth, to play and weigh in for transformation, to design solutions. She wears it daily in her witchy-wild hair. Her native tongue motto denk mal means she has a lot to say, not only about the industry but also the culture and the future, which we – all of us - create today. It is a call for commitment and care. Dare!
Critically, she defends a 'made on demand' approach to consumer goods as a non negotiable solution for the future, a definitive answer to planned obsolescence, gross overproduction and the depletion of resounrces. She sets the bar high, aiming to set a precedent by questioning the industry we are all part of, be it as designers, makers, consumers or abusers.

mid 2021 we decided to approach Boris Delta. We felt we both have something very much in common: we like to play.
Naturally, the mi_fanscarf seemed to become the best playground to express exactly that and something else.
With “YOUR NAME HERE, a custom and on demand product series blueprint of mi we are set to release 3x100 numbered A PLAY THING fanscarf sleeves.
NOTE: BORIS TRELLEGEN/Delta 10/2021
I came up with the name APT somewhere in 2008. First it was short of A Plastic Toy. I did variations with Apt in the form of ACT; A Conrete Toy.
Some years ago I wanted to expand it. The coin dropped, and A Play Thing came to mind. (note to Its a Jazz Thing, its a New York thing, etc.)
What I like to channel into APT is the refusal to grow up, the longing for escape into Otaku culture, the inverse of growing up; not willing to take responsibility yet.
Giving the freedom to have multiple identities, mi_scarfsleeve is the best playground for any artist that likes to play. Boris Tellegen, a.k.a. DELTA does exactly that and created in collaboration with mi a three piece edition as the launch of YOUR NAME HERE, the first edition of a custom and on-demand product.
